NORTHLAND TAE KWON DO & KUMDO

Tae Kwon Do is a Korean Art of Self Defense.  Students are taught that the techniques learned and practiced are never to be used offensively.  The defensive nature of the art can be seen as one watches each of the patterns that are taught and notices that they all begin with a block and never a strike.

Tae Kwon Do Defense means more than just kicking and punching
Whether we are teaching children how not to be bullied or teaching a self defense course for women we try to teach first how to defend themselves without having to kick or punch.  We teach the students to first be smart and to use their common sense and not to put themselves in negative situations if they can help it.  We teach confident body posture so as not to look like an easy target or an easy victim.  We teach how to use their voice assertively to try and end a situation so it does not have to lead to a physical confrontation.  In Tae Kwon Do we practice this by having loud confident answers and yells, having strong posture and eye contact during techniques and patterns, and through gaining confidence as they progress through the ranks.  If a situation arises or continues to escalate to a physical confrontation, students have learned how to defend and protect themselves physically as well.

Tae Kwon Do Teaches Patience, Control, and Concentration
Through continued practice to perfect a technique or pattern we learn patience.  When we have a technique that is difficult and we become upset or frustrated that we are having a hard time perfecting it we learn to practice control over our emotions, and through repeated practice we learn concentration and focus.  We teach that these are life skills and need to be used inside and outside of the gym; at home, school, work .... Everywhere.

Tae Kwon Do Teaches Goal Orientation
Tae Kwon Do teaches both short term and long term goal setting.  As one strives for each new belt they set a new short term goal.  As one continues their progress through the ranks they can reach a long term goal of black belt or higher.

Tae Kwon Do Teaches us to be Mentally fit
Tae Kwon Do teaches us to be aware of our surroundings at all times.  This not only benefits us from perceiving a possible physical threat early, but by being more aware to be able to enjoy all that is going on around us.  Tae Kwon Do is also a great way to relieve stress.

Tae Kwon Do's Physical Benefits
Often students join for the physical benefits of staying in or getting into shape or to lose weight.  The practice of techniques also helps build coordination, flexibility and balance.
